TV interference from Italy

The study involved an investigation into the potential for interference into mobile networks deployed in neighbouring countries, using IMT technologies, if Italy continued to use high power TV transmitters in the 790 – 862 MHz band for Digital Terrestrial TV.  The interference analysis was undertaken using the in-house spectrum planning tool and parameters from the RRC-06 (Radio Regional Conference held in 2006) database.  This identified that there were 3 transmission sites in particular in Italy that were likely to cause interference and a further 7 sites that were likely to generate more localised interference.

The figure below shows an example of the modelling output where a TV transmitter site in Italy was identified as causing interference into Montenegro and Albania.

The yellow shaded area equates to an interference level of > >20 dBµv/m and was considered to constitute a relatively high risk of interference and the red shaded area an interference level of 10-20 dBµv/m constituting a moderate risk.

It was concluded that it might be possible to re-engineer the interfering sites by modifying the antenna patterns.
