The study addressed four key issues in relation to the use of UHF locally unused TV frequencies (commonly referred to as “white spaces”) for wireless home networking, namely:
- the current status of white space technology,
- availability of spectrum within the UK for white space wireless home networks,
- a comparison of the likely coverage in a typical domestic environment in the existing 2.4 GHz (WiFi) and UHF TV bands,
- the potential for interference between white space wireless home networks and other devices.
Finally on the basis of these considerations the implementation challenges were identified in regards to delivering efficient, low cost consumer devices for operation in white space frequencies.
